Feeling the heat? You might have noticed the seas are, too! In the latest State of South West Seas report, which brings together findings from eco scientists and conservation organisations, marine heatwaves were a key concern. But what does that actually mean? With the seas around us reaching marine heatwave temperature levels for the third year in a row, there’s growing evidence of climate-related shifts in species distributions, as well as environmental-related stress 👎 The Marine Biological Association's key findings include: 🔹A major increase in common octopus abundance and spiny lobster populations 🔹 A continued decline in basking shark sightings and certain starfish 🔹 Some species (like common dolphins) are moving northwards 🔹 Seagrass habitats are growing 🔹 Bleaching has now been observed in some intertidal algal communities Climate change is happening right on our doorstep.
